Modernizing Telephony System - Toshiba Strata CTX28 to Servpac Yealink

The Toshiba Strata CTX28 was introduced in 2004 to support small office businesses. When I first arrived at Hawaiian Paradise Coffee, I was surprised to see their telephony system. The Toshiba Strata CTX28 interface and management was undocumented and unsupported to its' legacy lifecycle, manufacture discontinued in 2006 while support ended in 2013. Given its' out of date technology, support was incredibly difficult and the system frequently experienced outages and loss of voicemail data. A modernization effort was greatly needed and I was assigned as the project manager for the task.

Autoattendant Call-Flow

I reached out to several vendors regarding their Managed VoIP services and after evaluating their pricings and service, I decided to go move forward Servpac. Using my knowledge with Cisco Unified Communication suite of applications (CUCM, Unity Connection, and etc.), I was able install and have the new phones in production in a month's time with a whole new Autoattendant script (We used a Fiverr voice talent to read off of a script that was approved by the President).

Integrating Ubiquiti and Servpac Yealink

Since our Infrastructure enabled vlan, special configurations on the IP Phone and Ubuquiti switches were needed to integrate the VoIP service on LAN:

Procedure:

  1. In Ubiquiti switch interface, select the access port and enable Voice VLAN option and set it to your VoIP vlan network:

  2. Set the Yealink IP Phone to the same VLAN:

  3. Once all the network configuration are set, check the status of the IP Phone and dial outbound and receive calls inbound

Conclusion

Once we integrated the Servpac Yealink into our infrastructure and pushed the new autoattendant call-flow in production, we were no longer experiencing outages due to the legacy hardware of the Toshiba equipment. Users are able to utilize modern IP Phone features - forwarding to cellphone, voicemail attachments in email from missed calls, and directory services to name a few. The modernization of the telephony was integral to the growth of the business as it was critical that we could receive and access voicemail at all times to make sure orders are fulfilled in adequate amount of time.
